Fashion engineering is a multidisciplinary field that combines elements of fashion design and engineering to create innovative and technologically advanced clothing and accessories. Fashion engineering allows students to explore and integrate cutting-edge technologies into the design and production of clothing. This includes the use of smart fabrics, wearable technology, and sustainable materials, which are increasingly important in the fashion industry.

Students in fashion engineering develop a unique skill set that combines both creative and technical abilities. They learn to apply engineering principles to solve design challenges, bridging the gap between fashion and technology.

Throughout the program, students will build a portfolio showcasing their hands-on projects, designs, and reflections. This portfolio becomes a valuable asset for future academic or professional opportunities.

July 15 – 19, 2024 | Olin/Wellesley, MA

More About: Awards – Research Programs – Sample Week

Students may design and create prototypes of garments incorporating sensors, LEDs, or other electronic components. They learn basic circuitry, programming, and integration techniques.

Students may be given a challenge to create a sustainable fashion piece using eco-friendly materials, recycled fabrics, or upcycled clothing. They consider the life cycle and environmental impact of their designs.

Students may design and 3D print fashion accessories such as jewelry, buttons, or embellishments. Emphasis is placed on exploring different materials and finishes.

Students may work in teams to conceptualize, design, and create a themed fashion show. This includes developing garments, choreographing the show, and incorporating technological elements.

Student Comments from Summer 2023 One-Week Engineering Program

“I loved the program and the teachers were amazing. They helped us with anything and everything with a lot of patience. The program was amazing and I really enjoyed 3D printing and designing. Very fun course!”

“The program was rather enjoyable, we got plenty of creative freedom and the instructors encouraged everyone to think outside the box.”

“I had many chances to make things on my own. In ordinary school, I only learned about the knowledge of books. The Boston Leadership program gave me the chance to do stuff in reality.”
