The one-week Introduction to Surgery program will present students with basic surgical skills, such as surgical knot tying and suturing, and then allow them to translate these skills to mock surgeries. Cardiovascular diseases and surgical procedures will be focused on this week, including coronary artery bypass grafting.  Students will additionally complete, in groups, a slideshow presentation involving cardiothoracic diseases and their surgical treatments.

Student Comments

‘I loved the mock surgeries we did and how hands-on the program was. The teachers were great and I feel like I really learned a lot. Also, I liked how they made you really problem solve and figure things out on our own.’

‘The intro to surgery program was filled with lectures and note-taking, as well as a hands-on experience. My teacher was very accommodating with different learning experiences. What I like about the program is that I got to learn different types of surgeries and actually perform them.’

‘The teachers were very nice and useful. They’re smart and funny and I’ve learned a lot from them by taking this course. Because of this program I know how to tie knots using sutures in different types of ways. I also learned the proper way to hold/use the tools.’

Student Comments (Continued)

‘She made learning fun and was very knowledgeable! She made it so that I was actually willing to learn during the summer. The program was very hands-on (super good)! The structure in which we learned in the morning, had a break for lunch, and then applied the skills we learned in the lab in the afternoon session was perfect.’

‘The program is better than expected. It was a warm environment that enabled us to share more ideas and discuss with each other. The teacher was great thankfully. I was able to understand everything and didn’t have any doubts.’

‘The teachers were very thorough in their explanations and the class was very interactive and fun. The dissections were very helpful to understand the objectives.’

‘I like how we did a lot of dissecting. It wasn’t just sitting in a room and learning about surgery, it was hands-on which made the class more interesting.’
