One in three people will experience major depression at some point in their lives. Therapy is intended to help individuals experiencing various mental disorders and distressing psychosocial symptoms. But not all therapies work and some may even be counterproductive. The emphasis today is on evidence-based therapy with scientifically proven effects.
In this hands-on introduction to the science of therapy, students will use knowledge of clinical psychology and apply the basics of therapies such as mindfulness training and cognitive behavioral therapy to treat mock individuals with different mental disorders.
They will move on to group settings and learn the basics of couples therapy, family therapy, and group therapy for conditions such as addiction. Again, they will diagnose, develop treatment plans for, and treat mock clients through role-playing.
Students will also look at the effects of exercise, music, and art on mood by engaging in these activities and charting their own mood. They will examine evidence on whether or not these forms of therapy work and for what conditions.
