Biomedical & Surgical Research: Remote
Competitive-Admissions Program
**Best STEM Program for International Students, 2020 – SciTeens | Best Summer Program for Pre-Med, 2020 – College Transitions | Best Supplemental STEM Education, 2020: Massachusetts – Corporate Vision Small Business**
July 5th – 16th, 2027
11:00 am – 4:00 pm EST on Zoom | Tuition: $1200
How do we run a lab-based Biomedical & Surgical Research program remotely?
Complete an award-winning, competitive admissions program this summer. You’ll thank yourself when you have one more prestigious credential to add to your college applications. We send lab supplies right to your home! ** The time is NOW to apply.
Below are a few examples of what you might do in class. Note the final activity – students will complete individual research projects on genetic diseases of their choice.
**Families that make their balance payments by the May 15th deadline will be mailed a kit shortly thereafter. Delays in sending in balance payments will delay shipments of the kits.
Hands-on Activities
In past years, students have done the following activities:
- Make Bacteria Glow with Jellyfish: This kit teaches you how to insert a Jellyfish gene, Green Fluorescent Protein(GFP), into bacteria. This allows the bacteria to glow green when you shine light onto them.
- Coronavirus Model: Our students learn about coronavirus structure and life cycle, and it provides a good starting point to discuss the challenges that are caused by novel virus strains. It can also be used as an introduction to general virus structure for all levels of students.
- Genome Editing: Students first make 3D models of the components of CRISPR – the enzyme Cas9 and guide RNAs. Next, they use these to see how genome editing is done. Making the model and carrying out the activity makes CRISPR easy to understand!
- Suturing: Suture practice kits are suitable for students to practice medical skills. The silicone skin is complete with lifelike textures to simulate wounds and ample space for personalized incisions, providing an ideal platform for effective practice in stitching and cutting.
The Biomedical and Surgical Research program brings biomedical and surgical science to life virtually! Through interactive lectures, live demonstrations, guided labs, and simulated surgical exercises, students explore the foundations of human anatomy and the practice of surgery under the guidance of an MD candidate
Over the course of the session, students gain a deep understanding of the body’s systems and the surgical techniques used to treat them. Students learn and practice essential skills such as surgical suturing and instrument handling using at-home practice kits mailed before the start of class.
In addition to mastering these skills, students dive into system-based modules:
Circulatory and Respiratory Systems
Students perform blood pressure analysis using personal cuffs and stethoscopes, observe live demonstrations of mock surgical procedures, and analyze case studies on cardiovascular and pulmonary conditions.
Nervous and Skeletal Systems
Students learn to conduct cranial nerve and reflex assessments virtually, follow detailed videos of spinal cord dissections, and explore surgical simulations.
Digestive System
Students research digestive diseases and present findings in small virtual groups. The unit may culminate in a guided mock gastric bypass simulation, where students apply anatomical knowledge and clinical reasoning to design and “perform” a virtual procedure.
2026 Instructor: Devante Kerr
Devante is a dual M.D./Ph.D. candidate at the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine. He previously conducted research at the Children’s National Research Institute and is the author of numerous research publications. He is also a recipient of the prestigious Karsh STEM Scholars Award.
Past Instructor: Esther Nwozo
Esther Nwozo is a dedicated medical student at Temple University School of Medicine, poised to embark on a promising career in healthcare. She completed her undergraduate studies in Biology at Howard University, graduating in May 2022. Her academic journey reflects a deep commitment to understanding the complexities of human biology and medicine.
Past Instructor: Osahon Iyamu
Osahon Iyamu is a medical student at the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine. He completed his undergraduate degree in Chemistry and Neuroscience from UNC-Chapel Hill in 2022. He has self-published and co-authored a book titled “Two Truths and a Lie,” which serves to help create more awareness about living healthier lifestyles.
Student Comments
‘I really enjoyed the program and my teacher. I learned a lot during the program like how difficult it is to get a drug passed by the FDA or to even make a drug that works with no side effects…I also learned what a successful Biotech company needs like marketing and money.
‘I liked how we learned about the industry of biotechnology and the different roles that are played there. I also liked how we observed drug discovery and the process which surrounds it.’
Note: This page represents our best expectations for the program. Activities and instructors are subject to change. In such cases, similar activities and a comparably qualified instructor will be sought.
